Understanding Bullying

Bullying can make you feel alone, scared, or hopeless. Whether it happens at school, online, or somewhere else, you deserve to feel safe and be treated with kindness and respect. If you're experiencing bullying, you're not alone, and there are ways to get help.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is when someone repeatedly hurts, threatens, or intimidates another person. It can happen in different ways:

  • Verbal: Name-calling, insults, spreading rumors.
  • Physical: Hitting, kicking, pushing, or damaging belongings.
  • Cyberbullying: Sending mean messages, posting hurtful comments, sharing private information.
  • Exclusion: Leaving someone out, ignoring, or isolating them on purpose.
  • Emotional: Manipulation, humiliation, or making someone feel worthless.

How to Respond

If you are being bullied, you can take steps to protect yourself and get support:

  • Stay calm: Bullies want to upset you. Try not to react emotionally.
  • Walk away: If possible, remove yourself from the situation.
  • Tell a trusted adult: Talk to a parent, teacher, school counselor, or another adult you trust.
  • Keep records: Save screenshots or messages if the bullying happens online.
  • Block and report: Use privacy settings to block online bullies and report them.
  • Find support: Talk to a friend or support group that can help you feel safe.

How to Help a Friend

If you see someone being bullied, your support can make a big difference:

  • Be there for them: Let them know you care and that they are not alone.
  • Speak up: If it’s safe, tell the bully to stop or support your friend in another way.
  • Report it: Encourage them to talk to an adult or report the bullying together.
  • Include them: Sit with them at lunch, invite them to play, or talk to them so they feel supported.
  • Be kind: A small act of kindness can mean a lot to someone who is being bullied.

Building Confidence and Self-Worth

If you’ve been bullied, remember: you are strong, important, and valuable. Here are some ways to build confidence and feel better about yourself:

Practice Self-Care

Do things that make you happy, like drawing, reading, listening to music, or playing sports.
